Promoting Menstrual Hygiene in Bokwoango, Buea: A community United for Change
In a transformative outreach held in Bokwoango, Buea, our team spearheaded a menstrual hygiene education program that left a lasting impact on the community. The initiative was designed to empower young girls with knowledge and resources, while fostering a culture of openness and support around menstruation.
The program began with comprehensive health education sessions, where participants learned about the menstrual cycle, hygiene practices, and the importance of breaking taboos surrounding menstruation. One of the most engaging aspects was the hands-on demonstration on how to properly wear and dispose of sanitary pads. This practical approach helped demystify the process and gave girls the confidence to manage their periods with dignity and safety.
The knowledge was paired with access, and we distributed sanitary pads to young girls in the community. This gesture not only addressed a critical need but also reinforced the message that menstrual health is a right.
The ground-breaking element of the program was the active involvement of boys. Their participation in discussions and activities helped dismantle stigma and fostered empathy and understanding.
This initiative in Bokwoango was more than just a health campaign; it was a movement toward gender equity, community empowerment, and lasting change. The smiles, questions, and shared experiences reminded us that when we educate and include everyone, we build stronger, healthier communities
